Previous Head Coaches

Shepherd University was under success from way back in 1955, when the team went undefeated for the first time in program history to now. Coaching changes have happened within the Rams football team, lets look back at whose come through that has made the program as strong as it is today:

  • Jesse E. Riggleman- Riggleman coached the Shepherd Rams for 11 years. Within the 11 year span he posted a 45-38-4 record, winning 51% of the games he coached. While working with the football team, he would also coach three other sports at the school; basketball, baseball, and the first ever track team in 1960.
  • Walter Barr- Before being a coach at Shepherd, he played three years as the team’s quarterback, under Jesse Riggleman. He than began coaching for 15 years, he posted a record of 107-48-4. He is known as the stepping-stone for the football’s success now. While coaching he won three conference championships (West Virginia Conference) in 1972, 1982, and 1983. He took the football team to their first post-season appearance in 1983. Coach Barr also won conference coach of the year three times; 1972, 1982, and 1983.
  • Monte Cater- Was the active wins leader in all levels of college football before retiring at 275 wins in his career. Cater coached at Shepherd for 31 years, he posted a 245-93-1 record while at Shepherd. He took Shepherd to their first ever Division 2 national championship game in 2015. He lead the team to 16 conference championships, and he won himself 12 conference coach of the year awards, with one Super Region 1 Coach of the Year award. While coaching, he served as the athletic director for Shepherd from 1993-2004.
